Carmen, a bright and cheerful waitress, starts her day at the bustling coastal diner in Newport, Oregon, welcoming locals and tourists alike. As she bounces from table to table, she is intrigued each day by a delightful pattern of storytelling from each customer. Each has a tale to tell, leaving her captivated by the events unfolding along the scenic coastline. Between busy times, she jots notes in a small notebook she keeps in her apron pocket, gathering stories for the book she’s writing about the fascinating people who pass through the diner’s doors.
After finishing her opening routine, Carmen waits on her first customer, Mr. Henderson, a retired sea captain who visits the coastal diner every morning. He sports an ever-present old San Francisco Giants baseball hat he’s had since the ‘90s and a long beard, adding to his mysterious aura. He shares a tale of a legendary kraken (Mystical sea creature, but in this case a mid-sized octopus) he encountered during his sailing days. According to him, the creature seemed to have a penchant for singing operatic arias before disappearing back into the depths.
“You mean, it sang in a human voice?” Carmen asked.
“No, it was just the sounds, kinda like a flute sound,” he replied.
The tale leaves the waitress intrigued and a bit skeptical.
After taking Mr. Henderson’s order, another regular arrives — Mrs. Montgomery, a birdwatcher with an affinity for bright-colored hats, who frequents the diner on her quest to spot rare avian species.
“Mrs. Montgomery!” Carmen calls out cheerfully, grabbing a menu. “Your usual spot by the window?”
“Yes, dear. Perfect for watching the gulls,” Mrs. Montgomery says, adjusting her vibrant yellow hat. “Oh, you won’t believe what I saw this morning! An eagle trying to steal a fish from a sea lion, right off the pier! The tourists were absolutely gobsmacked.”
Carmen pulls up a chair, her eyes sparkling with interest. “That must have been quite a sight! Have you added it to your scrapbook?”
“Indeed I have!” Mrs. Montgomery beams, pulling out a well-worn leather book from her oversized bag. She flips to the newest page, revealing a detailed sketch. “See here? I managed to capture the whole scene. That sea lion was not about to give up its breakfast!”
Carmen smiles softly, knowing that these bird-watching adventures have given Mrs. Montgomery a new lease on life since losing her husband.
“Your drawings keep getting better and better,” she says, admiring the careful attention to detail in the sketch.
“Thank you, dear. Since James passed, I’ve had more time to practice. He always said I should take up drawing again.” Mrs. Montgomery’s eyes mist over briefly before she brightens. “Now, how about one of those wonderful cinnamon bagels, lightly toasted, a cup of tea, and small bowl of honey?”
After putting Mrs. Montgomery’s order through to the kitchen, Carmen fills Mr. Henderson’s coffee cup and heads over to a local young man, Jimmy, the aspiring magician, who sits alone at a table practicing his tricks.
“Hi Jimmy, how’s tricks?” Carmen says with a friendly smile.
Jimmy laughs at her play on words. “I’m working on a new one for my YouTube channel, I’ll show you later.”
Carmen takes Jimmy’s order and heads to the kitchen, picking up Mr. Henderson’s order of a giant six-egg omelet with ham, bacon, cheeses, and onions.
“Ah, there you are, young lass,” Mr. Henderson says with a hearty chuckle. “Where was I? Ah, yes! The kraken!”
Carmen leans in, captivated by the sea captain’s storytelling prowess.
“As I said before, the kraken had a taste for opera!” Mr. Henderson exclaims, a grin spreading across his weathered face. “Every time it appeared, it would sing such beautiful arias that even the most hardened sailor would be moved to tears.”
Carmen can’t help but smile at the mental image of a fearsome kraken belting out operatic melodies.
“But here’s the twist!” Mr. Henderson leans in, lowering his voice conspiratorially. “One night, while sailing through a dense fog, I heard the most hauntingly beautiful voice coming from below deck. It was the kraken! Somehow, it had stowed away on my ship! In the fish holding tank.”
Carmen’s eyes widen in surprise. “You mean, the kraken was on your ship all along?”
Just then, the chef’s bell rings and Mrs. Montgomery’s order is ready. Carmen excuses herself and heads to the chef’s counter as Mr. Henderson shrugs and focuses his attention on consuming his giant omelet.
With a warm smile, Carmen glides over to Mrs. Montgomery’s table where the quirky birdwatcher is sipping her tea while observing a group of seagulls through her binoculars. Carmen gently places a fresh cup of tea in front of Mrs. Montgomery and her order of a lightly toasted cinnamon bagel with a small bowl of honey. Mrs. Montgomery looks up and greets Carmen with a delighted grin.
“Hello, dearie! Just in time to witness my feathered friends in action,” Mrs. Montgomery says, gesturing towards the seagulls out the window.
Carmen chuckles and takes a seat opposite her.
“I must say, Mrs. Montgomery, you really have a way with birds.”
“Oh, thank you, dear! Birds have always held a special place in my heart,” Mrs. Montgomery replies with a fond glint in her eyes. “But let me tell you about the time when a seagull got rather mischievous with my hat!”
Carmen leans forward, eager to hear another of Mrs. Montgomery’s entertaining escapades.
“It was a sunny morning, much like today,” Mrs. Montgomery begins. “I was perched on a bench near the pier, minding my own business, when I felt a sudden gust of wind. Before I knew it, a mischievous seagull swooped down from the sky and snatched my favorite straw hat!”
“Oh, no!” Carmen gasps, trying to picture the scene.
Mrs. Montgomery laughs heartily. “You should have seen me, dear! I jumped up and chased that cheeky seagull all around the docks, waving my arms and shouting like a madwoman. People stared, and some even joined in the chase, thinking it was some kind of game.”
“I bet that was quite the spectacle,” Carmen says, giggling at the mental image of Mrs. Montgomery and the curious onlookers.
“Oh, it was, indeed!” Mrs. Montgomery continues. “We ran through the crowds, around souvenir shops, and under beach umbrellas. I was determined not to let that seagull steal my beloved hat.”
“And did you manage to catch it?” Carmen asks, intrigued.
Mrs. Montgomery nods triumphantly. “I did! After what felt like an eternity, I cornered that rascally seagull near a fish and chips stand by the beach. It finally dropped my hat when it realized I wouldn’t give up. I scooped up my hat and wore it proudly, surrounded by a cheering crowd of tourists and locals who witnessed the chase.”
Carmen can’t help but laugh, picturing the determined birdwatcher on her wild seagull chase adventure. She knows this is definitely one she’ll have to write down for her book.
“Since that day,” Mrs. Montgomery continues, “I’ve always kept a close eye on my hat during my birdwatching sessions. You never know when those clever seagulls might try another heist!”
“I can imagine!” Carmen says, thoroughly entertained. “You certainly know how to make birdwatching exciting.”
Mrs. Montgomery smiles warmly. “Life is full of surprises, dearie. It’s the unexpected moments that make it all the more memorable.”
After attending to other tables, Carmen picks up Jimmy’s order and makes her way back to his table where the young aspiring magician is now practicing a new card trick. Carmen can’t help but be impressed by his dedication and talent.
“Hey, Jimmy!” Carmen calls out cheerfully, pulling up a chair next to him. “What new tricks do you have up your sleeve today?”
Jimmy looks up with a bright smile. “Well, magicians always say, ‘Nothing up my sleeve!’ Hiya, Carmen! Check this out. It’s a card trick I’ve been working on. Pick a card, any card!”
Carmen giggles, playing along with his enthusiasm, and selects a card from the deck. Jimmy proceeds to dazzle her with a series of quick, mesmerizing moves, and when he finally reveals her chosen card, Carmen is genuinely amazed.
“Wow, that’s incredible, Jimmy!” Carmen exclaims. “You’re becoming quite the magician!”
Jimmy blushes with pride. “Thanks, Carmen. I’ve been practicing every day, hoping to become a famous magician one day.”
Carmen can’t help but feel a sense of admiration for the young dreamer before her. “I have no doubt you’ll achieve your dreams, Jimmy. You’ve already got a lot of talent and charisma.”
Encouraged by her words, Jimmy opens up about a recent magic mishap that left him red-faced during a street performance.
“Well, the other day, I was performing my magic tricks on the boardwalk,” Jimmy starts, “and I had this grand finale where I was supposed to pull a toy rabbit out of my hat.”
Carmen moves closer, her full attention captivated.
“But,” Jimmy continues sheepishly, “instead of a rabbit, a bunch of confetti flew out of my hat and scattered all over the audience!”
Carmen bursts into laughter, picturing the comical scene.
“Oh, no! That must have been quite the surprise for everyone.”
“Yeah, they laughed, and I tried to play it off like it was all part of the act,” Jimmy says, rolling his eyes at the memory. “It was embarrassing, but I guess it added some unexpected magic to the show.”
Carmen nods, reassuringly patting him on the shoulder. “That’s the spirit, Jimmy! Sometimes, the best magic comes from the unexpected.”
“You’re right,” Jimmy says with a grin. “I’ll just have to keep practicing and perfecting my tricks. Maybe one day, I’ll get my big break and become a famous magician.”
“I have no doubt you will,” Carmen says, beaming at his determination. “And remember, even the greatest magicians faced their fair share of mishaps before they became legends.”
Feeling encouraged and inspired, Jimmy thanks Carmen for her kind words and sets off to eat his breakfast and practice more tricks.
As she leaves his table, Carmen is filled with a sense of hope and joy. Each encounter with her customers has left a lasting impression on her, reminding her of the beauty of following one’s passions and embracing life’s little surprises.
Gliding through the bustling diner, Carmen spots a familiar trio of elderly ladies seated at their usual corner booth. The “Jazz Band Jive,” or “JBJ” as they are affectionately known, are lively and full of energy. They are in the midst of deciding on their orders, their laughter and banter filling the air.
Carmen brings over her fresh pot of coffee and tops off their cups. She waits for an opening, then says, “Are you ladies ready?”
“Goodness me, I’ll have the pancakes with extra syrup!” the first lady exclaims with a mischievous twinkle in her eye.
“Dear, why don’t you just order syrup with a side of pancakes? Your sweet tooth is going to outlast us all!” another lady chimes in, causing all three of them to burst into laughter.
Carmen can’t help but grin, jotting down their orders. “Pancakes with extra syrup coming right up. And what about you two?”
The second lady does a standard two eggs, bacon, and wheat toast order.
The third lady leans in, her eyes twinkling with humor. “I’ll have the omelet with all the fixings. If you can fit the shot of rum in there, that would be splendid!”
Laughter erupts once again, and Carmen can’t help but join in.
“Sorry, I finished the last of the rum before I started this morning,” she says with a wink. The table of ladies bursts into laughter at the obvious joke. After taking their orders, Carmen lingers for a moment, drawn in by their contagious joy. “You ladies always know how to brighten up the place. What’s the secret to your everlasting energy?”
The first lady leans in, her voice full of mischief. “Oh, dear, it’s the jazz, of course! Keeps our toes tapping and our hearts young.”
Carmen chuckles. “Jazz, huh? Do you ladies play any instruments?”
“Oh, my dear, we certainly do!” the second lady chimes in. “Back in the day, we were part of an all-girl jazz band that took the coastal town by storm.”
“Is that so?” Carmen says, intrigued. “Let me drop this order to the kitchen and you can tell me more!”
Upon her return, the three ladies launch into their story, regaling Carmen with tales of their youth when they were the heart and soul of the town’s most beloved jazz band. They reminisce about their lively gigs, the thrilling performances, and the unforgettable nights they spent playing under the stars.
“We had this one gig on Dock 5,” the third lady recalls with a twinkle in her eye, “where the crowd danced so much they accidentally shook loose a bunch of seagulls from their perches. It was chaos and laughter all rolled into one!”
Carmen can’t help but imagine the scene — a whirlwind of music, dancing, and squawking seagulls.
“And then there was the time we played in the Loyalty Day parade,” the second lady continues, her face lighting up. “We marched through the streets, playing our hearts out, and the whole town followed us in a joyous procession.”
Carmen is captivated by their stories, transported to a time when the coastal town was alive with music and laughter.
“But,” the first lady says with a grin, “the best part was when we decided to play a surprise gig at the lighthouse during a King Tide event. The staff had a microphone and speakers set up, and we turned that lighthouse into a jazz sanctuary!”
Carmen’s eyes widen in amazement. “You played jazz in a lighthouse?”
“Indeed, dearie!” the third lady exclaims. “We lit up the night with our music, and the townspeople gathered around, swaying to the rhythms as the waves crashed around us. It was a night to remember.”
Carmen is filled with a sense of wonder, picturing the scene — the lighthouse casting its beam over the waves while jazz melodies filled the salty air.
Throughout the day, Carmen continues to serve her customers, cherishing their stories and appreciating the unique tapestry of life in the coastal tourist city. From Mr. Henderson’s mythical kraken to Mrs. Montgomery’s adventurous birdwatching tales and Jimmy’s comical magic mishap, each story adds to the charm of the seaside diner.
As Carmen pulls off her apron at the end of her shift, she realizes that her role as a server extends far beyond serving food and drinks. Being a listener and storyteller has brought her closer to the heart of the city’s charm. She takes her well-worn notebook from her apron pocket and tucks it into her backpack, thinking, This truly is a Story Cafe.
With a snap of her fingers, she grins. “That’s the title for my book!”
She leaves the diner that evening with a heart full of laughter, music, and the promise of more stories to come in the days ahead.
“Life on the Oregon coast is as good as you make it,” she says to herself with a smile.
